USMH celebrates funds raised for scholarships, opening of new Hospitality Center
The University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH) hosted its annual Feaste at Yuletide gala on Friday, December 6th. The event was held in the newly renovated USMH Hospitality Center on West Washington Street. During the program, Executive Director Mark Halsey announced that USMH raised more than $50,000 for scholarships through local businesses, foundations and personal donations. This is the most that has been raised through the event in a single year.
The gala was the first event held in the new Hospitality Center, which was renovated primarily for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) bachelor's program. Dr. Nancy S. Niemi, UMES provost, spoke about the importance of the program to "support the industry's needs." Dr. Joann Boughman, Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs at the University System of Maryland, reiterated the impact of USMH "making a difference in Hagerstown."
USMH awarded scholarships to 24 students for the 2019-2020 school year. Students who apply are asked to write about their community services experience as well as their academic and professional goals.
