USMH Hosts Way2GoMaryland College Preparedness Event
Way2GoMaryland, a statewide information campaign to encourage more students to begin preparing for college early, was held recently at USMH. This free event was offered to area sixth- through 10th-grade students and their parents or guardians by the University System of Maryland. Separate student and parent sessions were held. Students met with a college admissions representative to gain tips on applying to college, and they participated in a question-and-answer panel discussion with current college students who talked about various aspects of college life. Parents got advice on paying for college from a college financial aid officer and a representative from the College Savings Plans of Maryland. The 33 students who registered were invited to enter an essay contest for a chance to win an Amazon Kindle. Congratulations to Western Heights sixth grader Thomas Knapp whose essay came in first place, winning him the Kindle!
Following the sessions, students and their parents reunited to attend a college fair where nine Maryland universities and Hagerstown Community College were represented.
