Thank you for your interest in the Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES)! The purpose of this message is to highlight the extraordinary business and managerial career opportunities available in the hospitality and tourism industry to you as a UMES graduate, and invite you to join us.
Graduates of the HTM program are employed in regional and national positions with major industry employers. You will recognize some of these names as Marriott Hotels, Maryland Live Casino, Red Lobster Restaurants, Sodexho Contract Services, Princess Cruises, Hyatt Hotels, T.G.I. Friday’s Restaurants, and Aramark Contract Services. At graduation, HTM graduates enjoy multiple job offers from these companies and other high profile national and international leaders like the Walt Disney Company, Enterprise Auto Leasing, MGM Grand, Kimpton and Gaylord Hotels.
What will it be like at USMH while preparing for that great career opportunity? The HTM program is expected to begin at the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH) in spring of 2018. All required culinary arts and hospitality courses at the lower division level, plus all upper division courses required for the degree, will be taken in USMH’s new state-of-the-art Hospitality Center. Study can be pursued either part-time or full-time.
UMES presents the complete package for a lucrative and satisfying hospitality management career, which is available at no other university in the University System of Maryland. The program prepares students to enter middle management positions in lodging, restaurant, travel, attractions, meeting/convention services, and food service.
To be considered for admission to the HTM program at USMH, a student should have attended an accredited institution of higher education and earned 54 or more credit hours, or earned a degree from a community college with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all previous work. Students will be expected to have completed their general education requirements, and several business courses as part of these credits. Upon entering the HTM program, they will complete a combination of lower division culinary arts and hospitality courses and all of their upper division major courses at USMH.
Hospitality and Tourism Management: 120 Credits
- UMES 40 credits of Gen Ed.: all or most will be satisfied at a community college
- UMES 62 credits of HTM major courses: all 62 must be taken at USMH
- UMES 3 credits of Supportive requirements: likely satisfied at a community college
- UMES 15 credits of Electives: all likely satisfied at a community college
Therefore, a student transferring with 54 – 60 credits from a community college will need to take 62 credits from UMES for the major plus 0-6 credits of additional general education credits.
