Statement by USM Leadership on Structural Racism and the Killing of George Floyd

Baltimore, Md. (May 29, 2020) - This week, George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, a brutal act that recalled other recent killings of black Americans. We acknowledge with one voice the structural racism that's taking the lives of our fellow citizens, and we stand in solidarity as we speak out against racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, discrimination against our LGBTQ and immigrant communities, religious intolerance, and bigotry of any kind.

Statement by USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman on Hate Speech, Violence, and Bigotry

Baltimore, Md. (May 27, 2021) - In the days since the deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas, the U.S. has seen escalating anti-Semetic hate speech and violence. It's wrong and reprehensible. Of course it is. There's no excuse for allowing criticism of the actions of a nation - whether or not one believes the criticism is valid - to metastasize assaults and slurs against individuals. Hate is malignant and dangerour. Always. And it has no place on our USM campuses or in our country.

Statement by USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman on the Derek Chauvin Verdict

Baltimore, Md. (April 20, 2021) -- I'm relieved by the jury's verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin. I'm encouraged that some measure of justice has been meted out. The verdict doesn't bring Mr. Floyd back to his family and loved ones, but it does bring accountability. It reminds us that justice can be served in this country, that Black Lives Matter, that our struggle matters.

It's vitally important to note that this was 2 1/2 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which should have brought freedom to all who were enslaved.
